Guinevere

Guinevere (April 9, 2007 – October 2, 2021)

While walking around our home in Lethbridge, Alberta, we started seeing a little black and white kitten wandering around. She started following us. We would pet her and keep walking. One day she found us far from our house, crossing busy downtown intersections and heavy traffic. One week later, we were walking around the Coulees and out from them ran this little kitten and followed us for a long time as we walked back to our home. We saw along the way that she was living outdoors in the grassy Coulees—we could not have that, so brought home with us. We had many nicknames for her, such as Good Girl Guinevere, Gucci Girl Gwen, Swiss Miss, and Pretty Girl. She met Lancelot and Percival and after about a week the three of them would cuddle and play—putting their paws around each other.

Guinevere soon was right at home—Lancelot would train her that when we did let her outside in the back garden to just sit on the chair and sleep—she was quite good at this until you were not looking, would climb the large tree in the yard only to realize she did not know how to come down—ah–she figured it out—jump into the neighbours yard and hide in his shed. Mom and Dad would then have to crawl through trying to get her. She would scratch frantically at the glass door wanted to come outside if she saw you outside. She loved nature – watching fish in an aquarium and birds outside.

Every morning Percival would jump onto Guinevere and pretend to bite her and she would let out a shriek. Guinevere would sneak into our sons crib, no matter what—she would wait until you did not see her—she would just lay there and make sure he was ok. She was there from the moment he was born and he was there for her as well.

She used to find money and cheques and lie down and roll on them. She grabbed wallets out of peoples handbags, running with them to hide them. She waited for people to open Christmas gifts and take the most expensive one in her mouth or paws and run to hide it. She clearly had a sense for wealth.

She has a habit of hopping down the stairs like a bunny—it was the cutest thing. She would lay on my husband and kneed his tummy, she then would sit in Mom’s chair, as if to say, I am the lady of the house—you can now leave. When my husband would get up very early for morning meetings, she would sit in his office or lay on his tummy while he drank coffee on the couch.

She moved with us to Kelowna and would go out onto the balcony with us—although on a leash. When we moved into a house she would walk into every room in the house every day, checking that everything was in its place. She would sleep down with my son in his room, sit in my husbands office and even on his desk. I would leave my seat and come back to find her in it, sitting beside my husband or son. She loved music and would wait for my son to play the piano—sitting on the couch downstairs.
She would come down into his room at bedtime to either sleep in his room or say good night, almost every night.

She was a very loving cat who was proud of her home and family. We loved her very much and will miss her. We will remember her and all the good times we had together.

I remember meeting Gwen in Lethbridge and then again in Kelowna. She was the sweetest of puds! Very loving and very present in the home activities. Your family will miss you so much! I hope that you are having a blast in kitty heaven…
