06 Apr Phoebe
Phoebe was the best pup that anyone could have asked for. She came to my wife in her moment of need, and watched out for her until she was able to meet me. We always said she was an angel on earth – the most perfect girl that we could have ever hoped for. It wasn’t until I removed a cactus from her paw that she truly started seeing me as her dad, instead of just the person occupying all of her moms time…
She created so many happy memories with us – from long walks in the snow (my favourite time), swimming in the lake (and jumping into the pool for a quick swim in the summer), or just curling up next to us on the couch after a long day to let us know that everything was going to be ok.
She was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis when she was 6 years old – a neuromuscular condition that made her body attack her own muscles, and we thought we were going to lose her – we had come to terms with it, and we were ready. But – lo and behold, our Phoebe was a fighter.
It took us all a few weeks to find a new routine, getting the medication dose right, and finding the right consistency of food for her (she wasn’t overly picky, but her appetite was still on the mend), and we made sure to give her all the love and support she deserved – even finding a good supportive high-chair for her to eat and drink in, as myasthenia Gravis also causes Megaesophagus, which affects the muscles in her esophagus and causes it to not function properly – so the high chair would allow the gravity to pull the food and water through to her stomach.
After about a month or so, a new routine was found, and we had our girl back, basically the same routine and energy levels as before, but the only difference now was the high chair, and her meds. We never thought we could get back to the same routine as before, or that she would be the same girl as she was before, but like I said – she was a fighter.
She touched so many peoples lives, and she had so much love to give that she definitely made it known when she wasn’t getting the attention she deserved. Either by throwing herself back into the arms of the people closest to her (we called it her trust fall), or giving her chest rubs, and she would physically move our hand down to her belly with her paw (she was quite demanding).
Like I’ve said before, she was a such a perfect girl, and there will never be another one like her – an angel on earth, but now she’s an angel up above, still watching over us, while chasing birdies with her other friends that had been waiting for her.
We love you so much, Phoebe. Thank you for gracing us and allowing us to be your caretakers for your life ❤️
